The Hops Queen
I love to go to the Telluride Blues and
Brews Festival. The annual festival is held in mid September, a time when the
Aspen are leaves turning yellow, orange, and crimson and Telluride, Colorado is
especially beautiful. The venue is the park at the edge of town where you sit on
the grass of the playing fields, surrounded by the incredibly beautiful San Juan
Mountains. Although blues is in the name, the music is not limited to that style
by any means. The styles range from blues to R&B, jazz, funk, rock, and unclassifiable
often with a heavy New Orleans / Southern influence. The festival starts on Friday
and ends Sunday evening.
On Saturday, the "Brews" component consists of all the microbrew beer you want
for a couple of hours. There are usually around 150 different beers to sample from
about 50 breweries. It is a great place to compare the many different styles of
beer from raspberry Hefeweizen to the most bitter pale ales. Because the free beer
only lasts a couple of hours, the party does not degenerate into drunken, vomiting,
chaos.
